The Stranger Outside My Window

It was a chilly morning. I woke up with a heavy chest. I knew something was wrong. You know some days when you know that things are not right, something was missing. I quickly glanced around me and Sam was deep in sleep. He was there and looked so calm in his sleep. I hurriedly gathered my thoughts and ran towards the kids room. I wanted to see if they were fine. They were also sleeping peacefully. I heaved a sigh of relief.

But there was still something which was making me uneasy.

I went to the kitchen to make myself a cup of tea. I usually made a cup of tea for me and Sam, every morning. I switched on the gas and put a pot of water to boil.

“What is it that it bothering me? Did I forget to check something in the house or should I call up my parents and see if they are fine? I should call up my brother and ask him if things are fine with him.”

So many thoughts were rushing through my head. I completely forgot, I had a pot of boiling water on the gas. I heard the bubbles of boiling water and lowered the gas temperature.

“What is wrong with me?”

I added the tea powder and sugar to the boiling water. I got to the fridge to take some milk out and as I shut the fridge door, I felt someone standing outside of my kitchen window. I felt as if someone was just staring at me. I immediately looked out and there was no one. My hands started sweating and the milk bottle from my hand started slipping.

“I felt someone standing outside the window. Who was it? This is too much Rumi. Pull yourself together, there is clearly nobody standing there.”

I took a deep breath. I added the milk to the boiling tea. Waited there patiently for the tea to start boiling. I poured the tea in two cups and went inside our bedroom to wake up Sam.

“Hey Sam, Tea is ready.”

Sam didn’t respond.

I went and gave him a soft kiss on his cheek. He was cold. The heater was on, then why was he so cold? I tried to wake him up a few more times but he was not moving. Sam was lying there still, cold as a stone. His skin had turned pale white. I put my two fingers under his nose and he was not breathing.

At that moment, I could not feel myself. I could not understand what was going on. I froze. Everything froze around me. Time stood still. This can’t be happening to me. I fell down on the floor and thought was the stranger outside my window, Sam?
